Our built environment has a huge impact on all aspects of our lives, not in the least quality of life and climate change. As an effect, huge potential resides in digitizing this industry and making data available for intelligent management and optimization of our environment. Various Artificial Intelligence techniques are investigated and adopted in the department of the Built Environment and used for improving the quality of our built environment.

AI Vacancies

EAISI focuses on deepening AI through innovative research in data and algorithms, widening AI by bringing in the human element: ethics, law and society and making AI a fundamental part of all engineering applications. Because TU/e is located in the Eindhoven Brainport region it is easy to connect with industry and quickly take AI applications to the next level.

ICAI Lab Eindhoven: AI-enabled Manufacturing and Maintenance research lab

The new EAISI lab “AI-enabled Manufacturing and Maintenance” (AIMM) is the first ICAI-Lab in Eindhoven and has been set up together with a number of industrial partners, to improve decision making in manufacturing and maintenance using artificial intelligence. AIMM aims to promote research in cooperation with high-tech industry and is a collaboration with four industrial partners, Nexperia, KMWE, Marel and Lely under the academic supervision of Ivo Adan and Geert-Jan van Houtum.

Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) pushes the frontier of robotics technologies in its many fields of expertise and applications. TU/e aims to positively impact our societal challenges in healthcare, energy, mobility and food.

Robot systems like manipulators, mobile robots, autonomous cars, surgical systems et cetera are a combination of many technologies and fields of expertise. Our research extends to many of those and includes expertise in autonomy, control systems, locomotion, mechatronics, artificial intelligence (machine learning / deep learning), material sciences, electronics, computer sciences, design and user interfacing.  It also encompasses less robot-centric expertise like the design of robot based system level factory solutions, its embedding in organizations and the study of its impact on we as humans and our society.

Human Augmentation Research & Technology Reaching beyond regular human senses to become more than human and achieve freedom of experience.

Serpentine AI

Serpentine AI discovers, develops, competes and contributes to a future with Artificial Intelligence.

Tech United

Tech United has two teams: one team competes with autonomous soccer robots in the Middle Size League of RoboCup and the other team participates with autonomous service robots in the @Home league. Both teams became World Champion (again) in 2019.

Fruitpunch AI

Our goal is to build a community that drives the implementation of Artificial Intelligence. We focus on AI education, taking students from theory to practice, and better connecting business, research and students. Among other things we organize an AI E-sports competition, an education track and AI Connect events.

University Racing Eindhoven

URE is building a high-tech revolutionary electric Formula-style race car to compete in the annual Formula Student competition. In 2019 they also competed with the first autonomous electric race car of the Benelux.

Blue Jay

We strive for a future where drones autonomously serve as intelligent companions capable of empowering and assisting people in their daily lives.

Solar Team Eindhoven

Solar Team Eindhoven is working on the sustainable mobility of the future and will participate in the 2019 World Solar Challenge in Australia with their solar car Stella Era. This family car can also share energy and park itself autonomously in the sun to charge.

Robots and people

Who is liable for accidents involving self-driving cars? How should a robot behave towards children and people in need of care? To what extent should we allow smart algorithms to make political choices? Artificial intelligence (AI) is developing at a rapid pace, and more and more people will be affected by it in their daily lives. That is why the focus of attention within Eindhoven’s AI institute EAISI doesn’t lie exclusively with matters of technology.

EU grant underscores EAISI’s role as AI center of excellence

A consortium of 55 European partners in the field of AI, including TU/e’s new AI institute EAISI, has been granted of 12 million euro from the European Union.
The TAILOR grant is part of the EU’s ambition to strengthen AI research excellence centers across Europe and facilitate their collaboration and networking.

Link?ping University in Sweden has the overall lead in this project under the supervision of Professor Fredrik Heintz. EAISI will manage the talent exchange with a connectivity fund worth 1.5 million euro, led by TU/e researcher Joaquin Vanschoren and another 350.000 for AI research at TU/e.

Carlo van de Weijer, General Manager of EAISI: “We are well on our way to increase the impact of the university and the Brainport region in the world of AI, amongst others by starting AI-education programs and by hiring new scientific staff. The TAILOR project is an important impulse to also strengthen our position in Europe, by creating a network of research excellence centers across all of Europe on the Foundations of Trustworthy AI.”

This project involves:

  • Creating AI excellence centers across Europe;
  • Developing an ambitious research and innovation roadmap for these centers;
  • A PhD program in cooperation with industry;
  • Setting up five basic research programs;
  • Developing new mechanisms to step up AI outreach;
  • Bringing together leading AI research centers to boost collaboration and AI research capacity of Europe as well as attracting and retaining talents in Europe.
